The absolute latest News

4-27-09 The garden is already going full bore, several varieties of lettuce and chard are coming along great and all the tomato seedlings are in the ground and doing well. We have kennebec and pontiac red potatoes along with many herbs in the ground too. We've got a lot planted this year and plan on some serious canning and freezing later this summer.

3-19-09 We've had 50 + eggs in the incubator for 20 days or so and they have started hatching out early just in time for the first day of spring. Rhode Island Reds and Barred Rocks make great layers of brown eggs. Raising them to laying size is a challenge, but we have done it many times before and the pay off is worth it. Been doing a little bit of tractor work this week grading around the farm and prepping the hay fields for the growing season.

3-16-09 Five more goats born this week. All the peach tree buds are looking like they are ready to pop and the tomato and okra seedlings are started. We have 50 some odd chicken eggs in the incubator with about a week to go before they hatch. Things are looking good for the spring season. Keep small farms alive, Check out nonais.org

2-20-09 Several Kid goats were born this week. We have 3 new does and 2 new bucks.

2-4-09 The Hereford bull Calf we have been bottle raising is growing fast and is about to be weaned. Several of the Doe goats have begun kidding and we're about to double our goat population. We are also planting over 200 Hardwoods (oaks, elm etc.) and 40 Apple trees this March for a stream buffer and wildlife refuge, so there is a lot of preparation going on for that. As always the work continues on our fencing projects for the Cattle and goats. The blueberry orchard is also being expanded this year. Our Homemade Goats Milk soap has been turning out great lately, the recipe is improving with time.

The spring of 2009

Summer is here early it seems this year. Been in the high 80's even up here in the foot-hills and the pollen is pretty thick. The goats are being bred back for the fall kidding and the cows are bred back for their spring calving next year.

Natural Gardening Spot

The garden area has been hand turned once this winter in preparation for the spring plantings. Of course this years Garlic crop was put in the ground on Halloween day and will be harvested sometime in mid July. This season we plan on growing several heirloom varieties including Cherokee purple tomatoes which we have had great luck with the past two years as well as "jericho" romaine lettuce that is fantastic.
